Harris is a pop-up nominee in an age of diminished attention spans, which gives her candidacy a strange power

Chicago

“There are no disasters,” said Britain’s former prime minister, Boris Johnson, who was born in America. “Only opportunities. And, indeed, opportunities for fresh disasters.”

That quote speaks nicely to the story of the Democratic Party’s 2024 election campaign. The first televised presidential debate, in Atlanta, Georgia on June 27, seemed to have been an absolute disaster. President Joe Biden’s clear and present feebleness had been exposed for all the world to see. His opponent, Donald Trump, became the favorite to win back the White House — then, sixteen days later, Trump survived an assassination attempt and his stock rose even higher.

Harris is a pop-up nominee in an age of diminished attention spans, which gives her candidacy a strange power

Biden was going to lose, but most Democrats were reluctant to remove him because his obvious replacement, Kamala Harris, was the least popular vice president in history.

Fast forward to today, however. Biden is out, Vice President Kamala Harris is in, and she has overtaken Trump in the polls. From being a catastrophe, that terrible debate now seems to have been the cathartic moment that the Democrats needed to turn their fortunes around. “What it did is it put reality in our face,” says Christopher Hale, a Democratic fundraiser.

Looking back, party insiders believe that the decision — probably taken by Biden’s closest advisors, Mike Donilon and Anita Dunn — to hold the debate in June, rather than September or October, was a stroke of accidental genius. It was early enough to give the Democrats time to push a broken Biden off the presidential ticket — and sufficiently late to mean his replacement could run a short campaign that avoided the full scrutiny of an election year.

Harris is a pop-up nominee in an age of diminished attention spans, which gives her candidacy a strange new power. The hapless vice president has been reinvented as Kamala the political superstar — and all the activists at Democratic National Convention in Chicago this week seem wildly excited.

It’s all very odd. In a matter of weeks, Harris has somehow become the Democratic presidential nominee without even giving a press conference or interview. Her campaign website is still missing any information about her policies yet the media keep calling her candidacy “flawless.”

The hype is working. Harris’s vice-presidential nominee, the sixty-year-old governor of Minnesota Tim Walz, has quickly become the only major party candidate in America to have a positive approval rating. He’s widely hailed as “America’s dad” — because nothing is too cheesy for US politics.

On Monday, Harris made a surprise early appearance on stage at the United Convention Center. “This November,” she said, “we will come together and declare with one voice as one people: ‘We are moving forward’ — with optimism, hope and faith.” The crowd went bananas, despite her saying almost nothing of substance. Later, Hillary Clinton appeared on the same stage to say that Harris could go further than her by finally smashing the patriarchal “glass ceiling” to become the first female president. “My friends,” she said, “when a barrier falls for one of us, it falls and clears the way for all of us.” Who needs policies when you can make history instead?

Speaking of history, Biden also appeared on Monday to give his own valediction. He shuffled out at the insultingly late time of 10:30 p.m. — and received a five-minute standing ovation. He dabbed his eyes with his handkerchief. “I love you all, folks,” he said.  “And America, I love you.” He promised to be “the best volunteer Harris and Walz’s camp have ever seen.” The music system blared out Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love” as he slowly disappeared off stage.

But all the schmaltz and the upbeat “vibes” could not quite disguise the grubby reality of the Biden-Harris switch up. Everybody knows that Joe did not fall nobly on his sword. Biden was forced out of the race by the Democratic top brass, including Nancy Pelosi, the former speaker of the House. “Sometimes you just have to take a punch for the children,” replied Nancy, mysteriously, when asked this week about “bad blood” between her and the man who is still commander-in-chief.

On Tuesday night, Mr. and Mrs. Obama, the two most popular Democrats in the world, took to the convention stage and talked as if Trump was still in the White House and Harris was not the serving vice president.

Former First Lady Michelle declared that, thanks to Harris, “hope is making a comeback.” She condemned Trump for “doubling down on his ugly, misogynistic, racist lies” and “demonizing our children.” “We don’t need four more years of bluster and chaos,” added Barack. “We’ve seen that movie. And we all know that the sequel’s usually worse.” He continued: “A Harris-Walz administration can help us move past some of the tired old debates that keep stifling progress, because at their core, Kamala and Tim understand that when everybody gets a fair shot, we’re all better off.”

Harris, who has long sought to style herself as “the female Obama,” must have enjoyed all that. Her goal now is to resurrect the Obama coalition, which brought together centrist Democrats and young progressives under the banner of “hope and change.” The Harris-Walz campaign prefers “joy” as its leitmotif, but like Obama it seeks to mix caution with left-wing enthusiasm.

Harris and Walz are also hijacking the libertarian language of the right to talk about their conspicuously unconservative agenda. On abortion, Harris says Americans should be free to make personal decisions without “government telling them what to do.”

Walz, for his part, says that “some of us are old enough to remember when it was Republicans who were talking about freedom… There’s a golden rule. Mind your own damn business!”

“Mind your own business” also seems to be the Harris campaign’s implicit response to anybody who wants to know what she stands for. At the convention, speaker after speaker talked about her “vision” and her “values.” But nobody said what they were. Doug Emhoff, Harris’s husband, said that Kamala is someone who “fights for what she believes in.” But he also couldn’t say what she believes in. She’s an empty vessel.

The Harris who ran for president in 2020 talked about banning fracking for oil and gas as well as implementing “Medicare for All.” Her 2024 campaign team now insists she has no intention of pursuing those policies.

Reports suggest that some of Harris’s richest political donors have been pressuring her to undo the Biden administration’s protectionist measures on trade. But Harris, the child of two left-wing professors, is no free-marketeer. The few economic policies she has revealed have had a populist flavor. She has proposed giving $25,000 grants to first-time home buyers and she wants to make good on Biden’s plan to raise corporation tax from 21 to 28 percent.

Last week, as part of Harris’s alleged plan to bring down the cost of living, she called for a law that would punish companies for “price-gouging” — a very radical-sounding move by American standards. Following a backlash, however, the Democratic governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer, insisted that journalists had been “reading too much” into the idea.

Observers in Britain might have spotted some similarities between the Harris-Walz campaign and Keir Starmer’s government. The Democrats and Labour are led by legal prosecutors who have been accused of concealing their inner radicalism in order to win more moderate voters. Both have attempted to make center-left politics appeal to working-class people. Both have committed to building millions of houses.

But unlike Starmer, Harris will not win with ease. The 2024 election will be bitterly fought and almost certainly decided by several swing states. She may be ahead in the national polls, but she’s still behind in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Arizona and Georgia. An “October surprise” in the weeks before election day may determine the result.

Harris’s vagueness is her strength. Trump is struggling to find his best lines of attack. He calls her a “communist” and a “lunatic,” but for now voters don’t seem to agree. His campaign wants to focus on her record as a “pro-criminal radical,” but she boasts of her work locking up child sexual abusers as district attorney in San Francisco.

The Harris-Walz team also believes it has mastered the art of getting under Trump’s skin. Rather than just denouncing Trump as a vile bigot, Democrats have taken to teasing him. They also call J.D. Vance “creepy and weird” and suggest he has sex with his sofa. It’s all very childish and that’s the point. Trump, who has always prided himself on being the master of playground insults, suddenly seems strangely mute.

Anonymous Republican strategists have been telling reporters that Trump is having meltdowns behind closed doors and his recent public performances have been unusually flat. Some sources claim his near brush with death last month has robbed him of some of his turbulent charisma.

But Trump is the more experienced political campaigner. His team believe that the fundamentals of the race have not changed, that the real Harris will eventually be exposed, and America won’t like what it sees. There are still seventy-five days until the election and plenty of opportunities for fresh disasters.

Meta CEO admits Biden-Harris admin pressured company to censor Americans

Mark Zuckerberg: 'I believe the government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken about it'

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted in a letter on Monday that his company, Facebook, was pressured by the Biden-Harris administration to censor Americans, particularly regarding COVID-19 content.

Zuckerberg made the admission in a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, more than a year after providing the committee with thousands of documents as part of its investigation into content moderation on online platforms.

Along with documents, the Meta CEO said, the company has provided a dozen employees to be available for transcribed interviews, stressing Meta’s cooperation with the investigation.

"There’s a lot of talk right now around how the U.S. government interacts with companies like Meta, and I want to be clear about our position," Zuckerberg wrote. "Our platforms are for everyone – we’re about promoting speech and helping people connect in a safe and secure way. As part of this, we regularly hear from governments around the world and others with various concerns around public discourse and public safety."

He told Jordan that in 2021, "senior officials" from the Biden administration and White House "repeatedly pressured our teams for months to censor certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire."

When Facebook did not agree with the censorship, Zuckerberg said, the Biden administration expressed a lot of frustration.

"Ultimately, it was our decision whether or not to take content down, and we own our decisions, including COVID-19-related changes we made to our enforcement in the wake of this pressure," Zuckerberg wrote. "I believe the government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken about it.

"I also think we made some choices that, with the benefit of hindsight and new information, we wouldn’t make today," he added. "Like I said to our teams at the time, I feel strongly that we should not compromise our content standards to pressure from any Administration in either direction – and we’re ready to push back if something like this happens."

A White House spokesperson responded to Fox News, "When confronted with a deadly pandemic, this administration encouraged responsible actions to protect public health and safety. Our position has been clear and consistent: we believe tech companies and other private actors should take into account the effects their actions have on the American people, while making independent choices about the information they present."

Facebook declined to comment beyond the text of the letter.

The committee first subpoenaed Meta for documents and information on Feb. 15, 2023, related to content moderation and Meta's engagements with the executive branch to censor speech.

At the time, the committee was investigating whether, and to what extent, the executive branch pressured or worked with private companies to stifle or tamp down certain kinds of speech at the request of the government, which could potentially be a violation of the First Amendment.

In Monday’s letter, Zuckerberg also wrote about throttling the Hunter Biden laptop story.

He wrote that the FBI warned his company about "a potential Russian disinformation operation" regarding the Biden family and Burisma, leading up to the 2020 election.

Zuckerberg said a New York Post story that fall reported on corruption allegations involving Biden’s family, so they had fact-checkers review the story and temporarily demote it while waiting for a reply.

"It’s since been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in retrospect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story," Zuckerberg wrote. "We’ve changed our policies and processes to make sure this doesn’t happen again – for instance, we no longer temporarily demote things in the U.S. while waiting for fact-checkers."

Fox News' Kate Sprague contributed to this report.

No One Is Buying It

COMMENTARY

No one is buying what Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party are selling these days.

Earlier this week, on the opening night of the demonic confab in Chicago that Democrats call their national convention, the outgoing commander-in-chief explicitly denied that he was "angry at all those people" who said he should "step down" following his catastrophic faceplant at the June presidential debate. There is not a single soul who actually believes this. For weeks following the debate, while the corporate media and Democrat elites circled like piranhas, the White House defiantly stood its ground and insisted it wasn't going anywhere. Biden eventually caved, but it beggars belief that he is not angry at those very Democrats who shivved him in the back and then forced him to read his own political eulogy -- a screeching, bitter rant -- on national television. No one is buying it, Joe.

On the second night of their satanic summit, Democrats heard from dyed-in-the-wool communist Bernie Sanders. Sanders, who honeymooned in the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War and flew a literal hammer-and-sickle communist flag in his old mayoral office, is a leading kingmaker in today's Democratic Party. At one point during his speech, Sanders intoned: "I want you all to remember where we were three and a half years ago." Do Democrats really want to compare the actual track records of Donald Trump and Biden? Before COVID-19 hampered Trump's final year in office, Russia didn't invade Ukraine, Hamas didn't massacre Israelis, the economy didn't enter a formal recession, inflation didn't reach a four-decade high, millions of unvetted illegal aliens didn't flood into the country, and America was a net-exporter of energy. No one is buying this one either, commie.

Later on Tuesday, conventioneers heard from the two supreme titans who truly control today's radical Democratic Party: Barack and Michelle Obama. Barack and Michelle tried to gin up artificial enthusiasm for Harris by recapturing the good ol' days 2008-era magic of "hope" and "yes we can!" No sentient human being could plausibly nod along to a comparison between Barack Obama and Harris. Shared far-left politics and general swarthiness aside, the talented orator Obama does not in any way resemble the dimwitted California cackler-in-chief, who is less popular than venereal disease and was only installed as Democrats' presidential nominee following Uncle Joe's bloodless coup due to a forced hand and lack of any other viable option.

In his speech, Obama also referenced how tapping his "friend" Biden as his 2008 running mate was one of his "best" decisions. Really, how stupid do they think we are? Obama, although he didn't have the courage to publicly call for it, was -- along with Nancy Pelosi -- a leading plotter of Biden's fateful July coup. Indeed, Biden himself didn't even stick around for Obama's harangue; he had already jetted off for sunny California. Harris also skipped town for Milwaukee the night of Obama's primetime Chicago speech, apparently in order to not risk offending Biden. As Fox News senior White House correspondent Jacqui Heinrich reported based on a close source, the "Obamas are still not on the White House good side." Nor should they be! No one is buying this ridiculous pretense of a grand Democratic Party kumbaya.

Finally, large swaths of the Democrats' diabolical Windy City conclave were dedicated to celebrating the legacy of Biden, a purported "patriot" and "good man" who put "country above party" by "selflessly" bowing out of the presidential race. This entire narrative is a lie. Biden was not "selfless" or "noble" in gently "bowing out" -- he was ruthlessly coup'd by his partisan peers. Democrats, unlike Republicans, believe in nothing so much as they believe in doing whatever it takes to win. There was nothing whatsoever voluntary or selfless about this -- just one party doing whatever it felt it had to do to maximize its chances of victory against an opponent it has falsely lambasted as a unique threat to "our democracy."

As for the notion that Biden is a "good man" -- this too is a lie. Indeed, it has been one of the biggest, most frequently repeated lies of my entire life. Biden is not a good man. Let's ask Mary Ellen Bork whether Biden, who teamed up with Mary Jo Kopechne murderer Ted Kennedy to so brutally savage her late husband Robert's Supreme Court nomination that "bork" entered the English lexicon as a verb, is a "good man." We might also ask Clarence Thomas whether Biden, who did more than anyone else to spread Anita Hill's slanderous lies, is a "good man." Also: Can any father in America actually look at Hunter Biden and conclude that Joe was a good father?

If nothing else, no one is buying that.

Columbia University professor Jeffrey Sachs issues chilling warning about Trump assassination attempt: 'The government is smirking in our face' | Daily Mail Online

Economist and Columbia University Professor Jeffrey Sachs slammed the government for refusing to explain the details behind the assassination attempt against Donald Trump

Economist and Columbia University Professor Jeffrey Sachs slammed the government for refusing to explain the details behind the assassination attempt against Donald Trump.

Speaking to Tucker Carlson, Sachs said that the lack of background on what led to Trump being shot is what happens when the government refuses to level with citizens.

'We don't know what happened, it's absolutely shocking, we don't know the story and whether we ever will know the story is, like so many things now that are huge events,' he said.

Sachs - an Ivy Leaguer who has worked with the UN in the past but has been on the outs with liberal elites since promoting the COVID-19 'lab leak' theory - blames Americans' short attention spans preventing them from keeping Washington accountable.

'Assassination attempt on Trump, isn't that weeks ago? That's old news, we don't even talk about that anymore! We have no attention span, we have complete lying from the government, we have secrecy and confidentiality, so we never solve any of these issues'.

Speaking to Tucker Carlson, Sachs said that the lack of background on what led to Trump being shot is what happens when the government refuses to level with citizens

He then went on to complain about the government's attitude toward its citizens in return.

'The thing that gets me about Washington is they don't feel they have to respond to anything and you watch the spokespeople... they smirk! Right in your face to tell you you are nothing! We can tell anything to you! They smirk!'

Trump, 78, was shot at a Pennsylvania rally on July 13, with the bullet piercing the skin of his right ear. He says it was 'miracle' and act of God that he survived.

Last week, the FBI revealed that investigators who have conducted nearly 1,000 interviews do not yet have a motive for why 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks shot at Trump during a July campaign rally.

They believe that Crooks conducted 'extensive attack planning,' including looking up campaign events involving both Trump and current President Joe Biden, particularly in western Pennsylvania.

The FBI analysis of his online search history reveals a 'sustained, detailed effort to plan an attack on some event, meaning he looked at any number of events or targets,' Kevin Rojek, the special agent in charge of the FBI's Pittsburgh field office, told reporters last week.

Once a Trump rally was announced for July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, 'He became hyper-focused on that specific event and looked at it as a target of opportunity,' Rojek said.

Crooks' internet searches in the days leading up to the rally included queries about the grounds where the rally was held, 'Where will Trump speak from at Butler Farm Show?' 'Butler Farm Show podium' and 'Butler Farm Show photos.'

In the 30 days before the attack, the FBI says, Crooks did more than 60 internet searches related to Biden and Trump, including seeking the dates of both the Democratic and Republican national conventions.

FBI Director Christopher Wray has previously revealed that one week before the shooting, Crooks did a Google search for 'How far away was Oswald from Kennedy?'

That's an apparent reference to Lee Harvey Oswald, the shooter who killed President John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963.

The new details add to an emerging portrait of Crooks as a highly intelligent and reclusive man who investigators say in the years before the shooting had taken an eerie interest in explosives, violence and prominent public figures but whose internet searches of Democrats and Republicans alike have frustrated efforts to assign a simple political motive or to establish why Trump himself would have been targeted.

'We have a clear idea of mindset, but we are not ready to make any conclusive statements regarding motive at this time,' Rojek said. The FBI has also not found that anyone else had advance knowledge of the shooting or that Crooks had conspired with anyone else.

The FBI found explosive devices in his car and home, and investigators say his internet searches revealed that since at least 2019 he had looked up information about bomb-making materials, including about how remote detonators work.

The FBI has said that Trump was struck in the ear by a bullet or a bullet fragment in the assassination attempt.

Crooks fired eight shots from an AR-style rifle. One rallygoer was killed and two others were injured before the gunman, who was positioned on the roof of a building less than 150 yards away, was killed by a Secret Service counter-sniper.

Also last week, the FBI released images of the rifle Crooks used, his backpack and improvised explosive devices found in his car.
